Social Media and Moop Hoorenbeek
Most of the content of an email bulletin I got yesterday from IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) was about social media. The first article was about the CEO of Sun Microsystems, Jonathan Schwarz, and his blog — his daily unfiltered channel to employees, customers, and analysts. Sun is leading a transformation of the communication profession, with almost 3,000 Sun employee blogs that can be accessed at http://blogs.sun.com. Wow. That company really gets it.
Further into the bulletin I read about Second Life, Linden Labs’ very strange 3-D social network wonderland, and I just had to go there. Well, that kept me up 2 full hours past my bedtime, trying to get all of the 4 stars I needed to get out of Orientation Land. If you haven’t been there already, you must check this out – this is not a game. Two million “residents” and some of the world’s largest corporations visit and do business there (we’re talking Dell, GM, Toyota, Sun, IBM) — you can buy land, build a home, make friends, open shop, and — yes, really! — I learned to fly last night!
Go to secondlife.com, it’s free — unless you want to do commerce. And if you see a fuzzy-looking creature with a tail named Moop Hoorenbeek, say hi — it’s me!
